Urgent
Notice
WHAT IS YOUR NPI STATUS?
As of March 1, 2008, claims with both an NPI and a Medicare legacy
number will be rejected if:
• The NPI and Medicare legacy pair is not found on the Medicare NPI
crosswalk
• Claims without an NPI in the primary provider field will also be
rejected
• Claims with only a Medicare legacy number in the primary provider
field will also be rejected
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
You will not be able to get paid for any Medicare services you provide
until you begin using your NPI. Also, you must correct any data, which
may be preventing an NPI/legacy match on the NPI crosswalk.
TAKE ACTION TODAY!
Check with your office staff to be certain you have an NPI. If you do
not have an NPI, simply log onto the National Plan and Provider
Enumeration System (NPPES) and apply on line at
https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.
Begin submitting the NPI in the primary fields of the claim immediately
to ensure the NPI and Legacy identifier are matching in the NPI
crosswalk.
If you have an NPI, test your Medicare claims now! After you have
submitted claims containing both NPIs and legacy numbers and those
claims have been paid, Medicare urges you to send a small batch of
claims now with only the NPI in the primary provider fields. If the
results are positive, begin increasing the number of claims in the
batch. If your claim rejects and you need assistance, contact First
Coast Service Options’ (FCSO) EDI right away at (904) 791-8767.
