Our Mission Start Planning for FPS 2009 Spring Meeting

We are a professional association committed to continuously improving the ability of our more than 1,000 psychiatrist members to provide quality treatment for persons with mental illnesses.

Florida Psychiatric Society is the professional organization for all of Florida's psychiatrists from Key West to Pensacola.

The activities of the FPS are coordinated from our staff office in Tallahassee, Florida. The Council directs the activities of the Executive Director. Staff duties in support of those activities are then assigned by the Executive Director. The FPS also contracts for the services of our Government Relations Consultant, the registered lobbyist for the society.

For additional information, click on the About FPS button at the left.

TradeWinds Island Grand Resort--St. Pete Beach, Florida

The FPS Spring Council and CME Meeting will be March 20-22, 2009 at the St. Pete Beach TradeWinds Island Grand Resort.  Check back for more information later.

CME Information Update
As was the case previously, the CME courses required for re-licensure of MDs and DOs in Florida are not the same. This is because two separate licensing boards govern the practice of medicine and osteopathic medicine in Florida. For more info click here.
Florida Psychotherapeutic Medication Guidelines For Children and Adolescents and for Adults
Please note the following resources available to psychiatrists and other physicians prescribing psychotherapeutic medications to children and adolescents and for adults. Florida Psychiatric Society members have participated in development of the guidelines and the medical advisory committee which has commented on implementation of the Medicaid Drug Therapy Management Program for Behavioral Health, a program designed to review data on prescribing patterns of psychiatrists, pediatricians and other physicians treating patients with medications primarily in the categories of antidepressants, antipsychotics and ADHD medications.   Click Here.

Memorandum on Medicaid Reform Plan Position of the Florida Psychiatric Society Regarding Incarceration of Persons with Severe Mental Illness
Jim Daughton has prepared a memorandum that summarizes the Medicaid Reform Plan that is the subject of the upcoming special session of the legislature. Please go to the Members Only section to review this Legislative Update.  If you are a member of FPS and do not have a password you will have to contact the Tallahassee office and verify your membership. In the past several weeks judges throughout Florida have brought public attention to the problem of people in Florida with severe mental illnesses who sit in our state jails.  In fact, one Pinellas County Judge threatened to hold the Secretary of Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF) in contempt if the agency did not provide a more appropriate setting for this population.  The Florida Psychiatric Society  appreciates that judges throughout the state are alerting our citizens to the plight of these inmates. Jail is not a place to treat persons with severe mental illnesses.  For More Click Here.
