FCC approves 988 as new three-digit suicide prevention hotline number

By July 16, 2022, Americans will be able to dial 988 to access the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline rather than the ten-digit 1-800-273-TALK (8255). This will help Americans in crisis more easily access assistance from trained counselors.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline also offers an online chat service. Veterans and Service members may reach the VeteransCrisis Line by pressing 1 after dialing, chatting online at www.veteranscrisisline.net, or texting 838255.
