September 17th is World Patient Safety Day!

World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. Furthermore, the Day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.

The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the huge challenges health workers are facing globally. Health workers encounter increased risk of healthcare associated infections, violence, accidents, stigma, illness and death. Furthermore, working in stressful environments exacerbates risks to the physical and mental health and safety of health workers making them more prone to errors which might lead to patient harm.

Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety has, therefore, been selected as the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2020, which focuses on the interrelationship between health worker safety and patient safety, depicted in the slogan ‘Safe health workers, Safe patients’. This emphasizes the need for a safe working environment for health workers as a prerequisite for ensuring patient safety. Along with this slogan, WHO is proposing a call for action, Speak up for health worker safety!, which requests urgent and sustainable actions by all stakeholders to recognize and invest in the safety of health workers, as a priority for patient safety.
