Enacting New Legislation That May Impact Your Practice

Non-Opioid Alternatives

Effective July 1, 2019, before providing anesthesia or prescribing, ordering, dispensing, or administering an opioid listed as a Schedule II controlled substance to treat pain, health care providers must now inform a patient about available non-opioid alternatives and provide the patient with a Department of Health educational pamphlet. For more information about the new law and to view the pamphlet please visit one of the following websites:

Governor DeSantis recently signed telehealth legislation which establishes standards of practice for telehealth services, including patient evaluations, record-keeping, and controlled substances prescribing. In addition, the telehealth legislation authorizes out-of-state health care professionals to use telehealth to deliver health care services to Florida patients if they register with the Department of Health (DOH) and meet certain eligibility requirements. DOH expects the application for out-of-state providers to be available in early fall 2019. For more information regarding the new telehealth law visit the DOH website.
